I leave the laundry, mind whirling with everything I've just learned, but also rocked by the discovery that the women may leave whether with a mate or because it's their time.

Only now Grimm seeks to claim me, there's only one way for me to go.

It casts everything into a new light. The centaurs are not wholly dark, more of a murky gray. If I tell Grimm the truth about me, would he let me go?

So much was lost the day I was ripped from my family. I feel like I'm being torn in two directions. I love and miss my family—well, all save one—but I also cannot deny my feelings for Grimm. Right and wrong have no context when you know in your heart you have found the missing part of your soul. He’s not the male I would have chosen, but the time for choices is over, notwithstanding Summer’s statement that I don't have one anyway.

There are always choices of a kind.

I can go willingly into his claim.

Or I can choose not to be willing, to speak plainly to him and as an equal, because that's what I really want—for him to see me as I am and treat me like an equal.

There is only one path before me. I will tell him everything, even if he takes a crop to my bottom. Even if he ruts me, I’m going to make him listen to me. But as I enter the hall, I find that the great double doors are open and a group of farmers are standing before Grimm, fidgeting nervously.

“Go and help in the kitchens, lass,” the servant master says as he notices me gawking. “They were slow in their recent deliveries. Lance persuaded them it would be unwise to cross Grimm. Picked up a couple of new lasses for the stables while he was there. Mayhap there will be a feast tonight.”

The mere mention of new women for the stables, and the possibility that one of them might catch Grimm’s eyes, further charges my temper as I heed the servant master’s orders.

I need to stay the course, though. Whatever Grimm is discussing with the farmers, now isn’t the time to march up to him and demand my release, just to see what he will do.

It might help if I knew what I wanted him to do.

A mate, babes, and a life that's not ruled by the sound of a horn presents a simple yet enticing future, one I could embrace were the circumstances right.

There is no more time for pondering, for in the courtyard are three carts, fully laden with supplies, and a gathering of servants is unloading everything into the stores.

I join them because despite all Summer said, nothing has yet changed and I’m still a servant. As I pick up a bag full of cabbages and lug them into the stores, I consider how I've fallen from the Goddess’ grace. I don’t mind what I do. It's honest work. With every passing day, my former life and persona diminishes until it's almost gone.
